I have mostly been posting sketches recently, so I thought I'd mix it up! Here's a piece I'm working on right now just for fun. Its based upon an old character I had done for my post-apocalyptic project, which I decided to revisit. Super fun! Also here's a painting I had decided to continue working on. It was originally a building test for Tencent a few months ago, in which I recently decided to turn into a enviro piece. I have also been looking at a lot more gaming concept art recently, and it probably shows. haha.

I recently had two pieces accepted into the New York Society of Illustrators, student scholarship competition! YAY! only eight students from SJSU were accepted! My two pieces will be showcased along 200 pieces in May.

I always was one of the few lucky enough to win scholarship money, which will help fund my trip out to NY for the show! Im very excited! Lot's of awesome opportunities at school right now, so we will see what happens when I graduate in May!

For the holidays, me and a bunch of my a/i friends got together to do a "secret santa" style art exchange. Last year there was no theme, but THIS year was tarot card theme. Each person was assigned a person and a theme to create a piece for... I had "the chariot" and i was designing for my friend kim. I know she likes art noveau so i decided to do a sci-fi/art noveau influenced piece. And this is what i came up with!

it is the home/store of KASTE, my main character
there are 6 characters in total, each representing a different characteristic of ourselves. Ill post the rest later.

Next we will build the sets, light them, then make an illustration of it.

KASTE: is a secret chest. But for a living he helps people unlock their own secrets. But he can not seem to create the key to locking his secret. He hopes the more people he helps, the closer he will become to discovering his.

So we finished the post apocalypse project - i will make all my revisions during summer. My new project is to design environment for Frank Herbert's short story "seed Stock." Its about a world similar to our, but the sun is bigger and orange, the ocean is purple, and everything on the planet is poisonous to the Earthlings that have settled there. The Earthlings cams from Earth, and have settled on this island, they fish in the ocean (the only things that they can eat- if cooked properly) and live in the bluffs.

These are some of my thumbs for the enviro. I am going with the two on the top right. So now into design revisions and color passes!

OTHER NEWS~

I went to Burbank this past weekend to go to DIsney Inspire days! It was so amazing! i was lucky enough to even go, with spots opening up last minute. I got to meet lots of other students at other schools and talking about art, school, and show each others portfolios. It was fun meeting people i may potentially be working with in the future.

I got to go on a tour, AWESOME, and see lots of behind the scenes work on upcoming Disney films, Tangled and Winnie and the Pooh. THe best part was meeing with James Finch for portfolio review. He was the production designer on Princess and the Frog, and I was excited since i knew his work from my Art of book. He gave me amazing feedback and was incredibly nice. I am already putting in action was he has told me. Especially with my new environment pieces.

Overall the weekend made me so excited to my major, and to get back to my work and keep improving and working hard! Oh, and going out that night to the local back with fellow students, teachers, and alums was fantastic (and this amazing soda and candy shop we stumbled upon)

Final Project for Art 117: Visual Development

I decided to base it off a voodoo circus, in Louisiana.

Over winter break i will continue the paintings, trying to make them read better, and just painted better...

I am going to add some for entertaining elements in the color exterior, then repaint my interior (which is really sloppy, i struggled with that one a lot). Gary Soto's Tree House

SO here are my Tree House Designs for Gary Soto. It turned out A LOT better than my kitchen. I was really trying to get a mood in these pieces, and I accomplished that, but i guess a little too much. Well, revisions are due next week, so i am gonna get started on those, clean up my photoshop paintings, simplify, and just make them clearer. I even built a model of my treehouse, i wish i had done that earlier, i will post pictures of that next time with my final versions... and i am also now working on the locksmith character idea...

so....i lost my sketchbook a few weeks ago. Which SUCKS...cuz all my summer work had been in it...and I kind of lost motivation for awhile after that...

I dont really know what to work on, with taking viz dev in the fall. Im just trying to draw and analyze. But even that is failing...uh oh.

i am getting so caught up in my work experience, and hanging out with my co workers all the time and doing spontaneous things. I guess Im just trying to have fun and relax before it all ends. But my work ends in two weeks, then im off to Germany and Switz. and i cant WAIT to draw then.. WOOT!

so i can't seem to figure out my dad's scanner. i'm at home and camping til the 18th...i wanted to get my figure drawing from the Laguna College of Art session online. I had the best time. FIVE HOUR SESSSIONSS!!! it was so much fun. BUUUUUT, i wont be able to get the image up til i get back to sj.... :(

so after months of searching for a road bike. I found my vintage 10 speed bike on craigslist. beautiful condition, no scratches, like new. I paid 300 bucks for it, and worth every penny. Until...TWO DAYS LATER, i decide to ride with my friend on the light rail tracks through the tunnel. Little did we know on the other side, was a two foot ditch which ultimately, we both flew into, and went FLYING. my poor bike got its frame bent, and i am left with plenty of bruises. i could not believe, after only two days i ruined my bike.

So the next day I go to Bicycle Express. They tell me its a failure and i need to get a new frame. So the Mechanic, ERIC, told me to go to Fabers Bikes. I thought that the place was closed, after many failed attempts of going previously. When we got there, it just so happened that Alex, the guy who runs the place, shows up and opens shop. My first lucky break. So after some conversation and looks at the bike, he finds a fit. YAY! SOLD! 100 BUCKS it would set me back, including labor (he would the old bikes parts onto the new one). This guy Alex, was chill. HA, he had the most random stories. I told him i drew, and he told me i should come buy while he's changing parts on my bike and draw the place (ITS CRAZYYY!!!) Before I went back to draw, i get a call that he found a nicer frame, and would give it to me for the same price. my luck!

So i spent about 3.5 hours there. got a great sketch. my friend paul came, had some beers. It was a great adventure. I couldn't have expected for a better day. I even got a better frame than before (it has tons of paints chip, but is a better build) and got a great sketch. I ended my day with a bike that was tuned PERFECTLY, and i am better off than before. I ditched my old frame, no need, i got a NEW RIDE!

oh, and i finally got my scanner, so my images will look cleaner!

so cult made another trip to the zoo. THIS TIME, it was NOT RAINING! that was especially nice, i did not want another wet drawing adventure. BUT, i was underprepared. as i always am when i make a trip into the city. it was cold. but anyways. the day was fun. I got some nice animal sketches. I didnt really go into gesture much, but looking over the weatherly book has helped out a lot. Now im trying to understand the structure of the animal. versus just drawing what i see. which is what i had done last time i can. But anyways. i drew in pencil, so it was hard to get good digital copies from my sketchbook, plus it was on toned paper, so i had to photoshop them to get them to be visible enough to see. I also posted a sketch I did today of the room im staying in over summer, a long with some other random sketches (watercolor and colored pencils)...

I also posted a photo of the zoo trip group, along with my Fellow Orientation Staff! We are almost halfway through the summer, and have seen over two thousand freshman already. I get to meet every new animation/illustration student, and they are amazing! Ive seen a few talents, but all are very excited for fall, and so am I! beware 12:30 class, cult will dominate.

I finally got a break away from the reversal and put some of my sketches that I did in the art quad, starbucks and Happy Hollow Zoo (the shoe slide). I learned from the zoo i really, REALLY need to practice my animal gestures...

The perfect way to end spring break...a trip to Monterey with eight other amazing art students. We got too consumed with food and the aquarium and I did not draw as much as I would have liked. But, I had too good of a time to care. Overall I like the sketches that came out, drawing some marine life was new a different, AND MUCH NEEDED! my favorite was the kelp forest. I was so into it with the swaying of the tide and the epi c music. Almost as great as how our day ended...a sunset over the ocean.

I need a new scanner.

So today we decided to go and draw the St Pauls Cathedral in downtown. But we needed a good angle. After meandering around the building across the street, we end up on the roof. It was such a beautiful windy day, and a great view. I got a pretty good sketch, took a lot of time, couldnt get the bottom correct since it started getting cold and my joints froze up. :( but anyways, another C28 adventure for the books.

the last sketch is a quote i found in the book, "Into the Wild." SO i decided to illustrate two sides of a tree enclosing the quote. Using ink washes, pens, and a light grey tombo brush...

midterms, papers, and art. But i got through it okay, trying to sketch more again. Hopefully i will get around to drawing that cool tree on campus eventually.

So the sketch is Kim Kim. A more graphic pen and ink drawing. I went with some washes, and ink spills, and a more graphic and dynamic feel.

This weekend i went to Wondercon with my sister and fellow C28 kids. To sum it up, it was a BLAST. i was so awesome talking to all the different artists and looking at all their work. We also got to see Dave, yay. Later I went to go see Robert. I am really pleased how these sketches turned out. I believe it is because I was just so happy. The music and the slight breeze that was constantly blowing set up for a good artistic atmosphere, and very inspiring. Also, here are some sketches of the visit with Robert, and also my comic due for this week...

New Level

After lots and lots of drawing in the science building, we finally got into the "room." We had been eying this place for a long time. "It was like unlocking the next level in a video games." I had TONS of crazy birds skeletons, weird body parts of animals and a Ram's head. I spend so much time on the Ram's head. There was so much detail i didnt even know where to start. So i had to generalize a lot. But, It was so sad, because who knew when we would gain access to that level again... :(

And the other sketch was of the Peet's coffee counter, during a C28 gathering. This was the first drawing with my light grey tombo pen. It was nice to add subtle shadow to the drawing, It adds more dimension and is more visually appealing.

And Lastly, the painting I did today. Me and Godfather crashed fellow disciple, Jose's, beginning painting class. We painted, the teacher was really chill about it. He had asked what my major was, i said Animation/illustration. he replied with, "oh, so you're playing hokey on the third floor." classic. But anyways. I began with the bottle that everyone else was painting. I was not into it much, so then i just began literally pushing paint. To create blurs of faded colors and swirls. I can't help but turn every painting into some weird expressionists piece. I just get so into the movement of the brush, that all realism gets caught up in the paint and brushed away. But yea. So with the final piece, i took it home and outlines the shapes with Sharpie. It ended up looking better than expected...

Last weeks was really complex. And NO NEGATIVE SPACE. So i took a different route and simplified it, while having a variety in line quality...

...group drawing is the way to go. I got a sketch of Test Teas in there. He stole my pencil box, twice...And I attempted watercolors again. I am really trying to improve that skill since it will be helping in illustration. This time I did a quick ink sketch, and filled with watercolor. I enjoy this style much more, I can tear away from the linear aspect...

So today I created my blog. It was about time that I made one, i have enough work to show, and it can give me something to do. And give shout outs to fellow artists. C28!

So today, I finished my comic strip. I redid it since the first one I did not like, and was unreadable. I cannot turn in a piece of work I don't like, so I came up with a BETTER idea, and I am very pleased.

I also got together with the cult at Duncan Hall, and painted a watercolor. It was difficult since I had not used the medium in awhile. It was decent to start with, but I need to be more wary of the color usage, and when colors blend.
